Is the River Access Club a guiding service?
No. RAC is not a guiding or outfitting service. All trips are peer-led and voluntary. Members are responsible for their own safety, decisions, and gear.
What do my membership dues cover?
Membership covers access to the trip calendar, community resources, and orientation course. Shared costs for group gear, permits, and logistics are split separately per trip.
Do I need my own boat?
Yes. Every member is responsible for bringing or arranging their own rivercraft.
Some members choose to coordinate shared boats (such as a gear raft or canoe) through the Gear Garage, which operates separately from RAC. When these options are used, the costs and responsibilities (such as rowing, setup, and care) are divided among the participants who benefit from them.
RAC itself does not provide or rent boats—the Gear Garage is an independent resource that members may collectively choose to include.
What is the Orientation Course?
The RAC Orientation Course is a one-time requirement for all members. It ensures everyone understands the culture, safety principles, and responsibilities before joining trips.
What’s the “Gear Garage”?
The Gear Garage is a shared system for group items like kitchens, groovers, and sometimes gear rafts. It is not outfitting—members coordinate and contribute to the use and return of this gear.
How do trip costs work?
After membership and orientation, trips operate on cost-share only. That means members split the real expenses of gear, permits, and food equally. More people = lower costs.
Can I bring friends or family?
Yes—if they are RAC members and have completed the orientation. This keeps everyone on the same page with safety and responsibilities.
What if I’m new to rivers?
Beginners are welcome, as long as you’re prepared to be self-responsible, participate in group chores, and stay within your skill limits. RAC is a peer learning community—not a training service.
Is RAC insured?
No. RAC is a volunteer community, not a business or commercial operator. Members participate at their own risk and responsibility.
