The River Access Club (RAC) Core Training is the foundation for participation in our peer-led river trips. This digital course provides members with the essential knowledge, systems, and expectations needed to take part in safe, responsible, and community-driven expeditions.
You’ll learn how RAC operates as a membership-based community, how we share costs and responsibilities, and how to prepare for the realities of river life. From packing gear to setting up a camp kitchen, from food systems to group communication, you’ll gain the tools to show up as a fully contributing member of the team.
A central focus of this course is risk awareness. Rivers are powerful, unpredictable environments, and hazards are part of every trip. You’ll learn how to identify natural, human, and equipment-related risks, how to take responsibility for your own safety, and how to support group systems that keep everyone healthy and prepared.
This is not a guided program. RAC does not provide outfitting or professional services. Instead, the Core Training equips members with the knowledge and structure to confidently co-create river adventures with peers.
Completion of this course is required before gaining access to the trip calendar. It ensures every participant shares a common foundation of responsibility, safety awareness, and community culture.
By the end of this course, you will:
Understand RAC’s mission, structure, and non-commercial model.
Be able to pack and manage your own gear within group systems.
Know how to participate in shared camp kitchens and food systems.
Recognize common river hazards and risk factors.
Practice effective communication and group management.
Commit to environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles.
Be prepared to respond as a peer to common camp and river emergencies.
Bottom line: This course is about empowerment, accountability, and shared adventure. When everyone shows up prepared, RAC trips are safe, fun, and sustainable.
